Autumn Newsletter
Year 4
Pen y Fro Primary School
September 2025
Dear Parents/ Carers,
Welcome back to a new school year at Pen y Fro Primary, I hope you all had a wonderful summer holiday. The year 4,5 and 6 topic for the Autumn Term is ‘Terrible Tudors and Slimy Stewards’ which focuses in on two contrasting decades from the twentieth century. The children will be involved in the planning of our topic work and we will use their ideas to form the basis of our studies. The work will link to the six areas of learning: Literacy, Languages and Communication, Mathematics and Numeracy, Science and Technology, Humanities, Expressive Arts and Health and Well-Being. We are currently organising a school trip related to this topic, more details and arrangements will follow shortly. If you have any books or items of interest related to the class topic, please send them in for your child to show to the rest of the class.
Mathematics and Numeracy: Place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, properties of numbers, area and perimeter, length, bar charts, problem solving.
Literacy, Language and Communication: Non-chronological report writing, poetry, spellings, grammar and punctuation, story writing.
DCF: Internet safety and databases.
Other class routines include:
- Our weekly PE sessions will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that children bring appropriate kit for PE days in a small-labelled bag. PE kit should include a T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms/ shorts (which should be plain blue, navy or white if possible) and trainers.
- Forest school will be every other Friday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable ‘named’ clothing for these activities, including appropriate footwear. Please could children bring weather appropriate clothing and footwear in a name labelled bag to keep in the box outside of the classroom. The first forest school session will be on Friday 19th September.
- The children are able to bring fruit for breaktime either in their lunchbox or in a small tub, which they can keep in their individual trays. They are also required to bring a bottle of water, which we are able to refill as and when throughout the day. Please ensure that these are all labelled.
- Please ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school every day. Please listen to your child read as often as possible and make a weekly comment in their reading record. A discussion with your child about what he/ she has read can also help to check understanding.
- Our class Welsh mascot will be sent home with one of the pupils each week to spend the weekend with them. Please can you encourage your child to write (in Welsh) about their weekend in the notebook that will be inside the bag. There are also guide sheets and a Welsh dictionary inside the bag to help the children. Photos and drawings are also welcome.
- Homework activities will be issued on a Friday, to be handed in by the following Wednesday. As part of the weekly homework, pupils are expected to create 5 sentences from their weekly spelling words (pupils can choose any 5 out of the 10 words from their weekly spelling list). As well as spelling sentences, each week for homework, the main task will alternate between a maths task and a topic-related task from the homework grid, which will be generated using children’s planning ideas in school. We will also use MyMaths for some of the maths homework activities. Children’s usernames and passwords will remain the same as last year. I will issue all children with a paper copy of their Hwb and MyMaths login details in case they have forgotten. The first homework will be issued on Friday 19th September and will be spelling sentences and a homework grid task.
- Spelling and mental maths tests will be carried out every Friday morning. A list of weekly spelling words and maths questions will be given out at the beginning of every half term. Please ensure that your child prepares in advance for these tests. The first spelling and times tables tests will take place on Friday 19th of September.
More information with regards to Autumn events and forthcoming clubs will be sent in the September newsletter when dates and arrangements have been confirmed.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued help and support. I look forward to seeing you throughout the course of the term and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any worries or concerns.
Kind regards,
Mrs K Matthews
Year 4 Teacher.

We have been learning about relationships and how all families are different. As part of our forest school sessions, we created our own family portraits and discussed them with one another.
We have been working with SparkLab and we carried out an investigation to find out which liquid cleaned coins the best. We found out that the lemon juice cleaned the coins the best.
We are taking part in the Edina Trust Bulb project this year. We have planted our seeds and we are recording the temperature and rainfall every day. We have planted mystery bulbs-we wonder what they will be?
