15th April 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back to the Summer Term, let’s hope for some improved weather and lots of opportunities for outdoor learning!

Yo-ho-ho! This term’s topic will be ‘Land Ahoy!’ Get ready to take to the high seas and set sail in search of treasure! This term, we will read information books about pirates including the famous Welsh pirate Barti Ddu, we’ll find out about amazing sea rescues and some interesting sea creatures. Our Science and Technology skills will help us to understand how boats float and we’ll design and make model ships using a variety of materials (please keep hold of your old junk!). We’ll study paintings of boats and do some of our own. Our map reading skills will help us to identify different seas and oceans, and we’ll learn about some famous sea explorers. Stories of pirates will inspire us to make pirate flags, treasure maps and fact files. We’ll even find out how to sing a shanty! We will learn about the dangers of the sea and how to keep safe and look forward to our annual visit to the seaside. We be working collaboratively with Year 1 and 3 as Criw Carw and looking forward to integrated learning during Thrive Time. If you have any books, photos or other resources related to this topic that you think may support your child’s learning, please send them into school for show and tell.

Weekly literacy themes will include stories, poems, and non-fictional work. Spelling practise will focus on words with common suffixes and investigation of words which have the same sounds but different spelling. The children will continue to receive weekly differentiated spelling tests covering a range of patterns suitable for their individual needs (these will commence on 19.4.24). All children will begin joining their handwriting this term if they have not already done so. The correct handwriting style and formation will be reinforced and practised throughout all activities as well as specific focused sessions. Literacy across the curriculum will continue to be developed through topic related themes. Please continue to ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for our Reading Carousel. Please write in the record on a weekly basis, your comments are always valued. Your child will continue to be able to select a book of their choice from the school library to share with you at home also.

As usual, Mathematics will be taught through a range of practical activities as well as formal recording. It will involve varied number work including formal recording of division. We will also cover symmetry, mass, length, fractions, time duration and a range of problem-solving tasks. Much of this will be reinforced through our topic as Numeracy across the curriculum. As with the spelling, the children will continue to receive differentiated times table/division tests weekly (also commencing 19.4.24).

PE will continue to be on a Wednesday and Thursday.  Forest school related activities on a Friday. Please continue to ensure your child has suitable, named clothing and footwear for all these activities. PE will be outdoors as soon as the weather improves!

Many thanks for your continued support. Please contact us you have any queries or concerns.
