15th January 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! We hope that you all had a relaxing break.

Much of this term’s work will be based on our new topic ‘Spellbound’ this is a Science and Technology based topic which will involve lots of exciting magical themed experiments and investigations. The children will be involved in planning focused tasks and missions, their ideas will form the basis of our learning. We will be working collaboratively with Year 1 and 3 as Criw Carw and looking forward to integrated learning during Thrive Time. If you have any books, photos or other resources related to this topic that you think may support your child’s learning, please send them into school for show and tell.

In addition to the above we will be enjoying participation in seasonal activities such as the RSPB Big School’s Birdwatch, Children’s Mental Health week, our St David’s Day Eisteddfod and Easter. What a busy term!

In Literacy, children in Year 2 will continue to progress through the Read Write Inc. phonic patterns and will be encouraged to apply these to their independent reading and writing. They will continue to receive differentiated weekly spelling tests covering a range of related patterns. These tests will resume this week following formative assessments. In creative writing we will continue to look at connecting sentences and making effective use of synonyms and descriptive language. Literacy across the curriculum will be developed through rich tasks and topic related themes. These will include play scripts and poems as well as non-fictional work.

Please continue to ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school every Mon-Weds regardless of whether they have read with an adult. They take part in a carousel of activities and will need their reading books as part of these. Please write in the record on a weekly basis, your comments are always valued. Your child will continue to be able to select a book of their choice from the school library to share with you at home also.

Mathematics will be taught through a range of practical activities as well as more formal recording. This will involve varied number work, weight, 2-D shape, time, money and data handling. Much of this will also be reinforced through Thrive Time activities and topic related Numeracy across the curriculum. The children will continue to receive differentiated times table tests.

PE sessions will continue to be on a Wednesday afternoon and a Thursday morning. We will focus on gymnastics/dance this half term and return to ball skills and team games as the weather improves. Forest school/Outdoor

activities will continue to be on a Friday morning. It is very much appreciated when the children come to school fully prepared for these sessions with appropriate ‘named’ clothes and footwear.

Thank you for your continued hard work in supporting your child at home. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any concerns.

Kind Regards,

Ms Saskia de Vall (Class Teacher), Ms Ceri Macfarlane (Thursday’s Class Teacher) and Mrs Edwards (Class TA)
