Year 2
Year 2 Summer Term 2025
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back to the Summer Term. We are hoping for plenty of good weather and lots of opportunities for outdoor learning! Much of this term’s work will be based on the ‘Criw Carw’ summer topic: ‘Hop, skip and jump’. This is a fun and energetic theme that encourages physical movement while supporting learning across the curriculum. The children have already had the opportunity to share their ideas about what they'd like to learn within our topic. We will bring maths to life through activities such as measuring how far we can hop or how many skips we can do in a minute! This will allow the children to collect and compare data, and explore concepts including distance, time and number in real, practical ways. Our class is also lucky enough to be involved in the Lead Creative Schools project and through this we aim to promote creativity and critical thinking alongside core maths skills. We look forward to exploring how movement helps us stay healthy and happy, including the effect of exercise on our heart, muscles and bones. The children will express themselves creatively by undertaking artwork inspired by artists such as Matisse. They will also create and perform movement sequences and musical compositions. We’ll look at the history of playground games and how children in different countries move and play. We’ll also think about how our local environment supports our health and play. If you have any books, photos or other resources related to this topic that you think may support the children’s learning, please send them into school for show and tell.
Weekly literacy themes will include stories, poems, and non-fiction work. Spelling practise will focus on words with common suffixes and investigation of words which have the same sounds but different spelling. The children will continue to receive weekly differentiated spelling tests (these will commence on 8.5.25). The children will begin joining their handwriting this term if they have not already done so. The correct handwriting style and formation will be reinforced and practised throughout all activities as well as specific focused sessions. Literacy across the curriculum will continue to be developed through topic related themes. Please ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please write in the record on a weekly basis, your comments are always valued. Your child will continue to be able to select a book of their choice from the school library to share with you at home.
PE will continue to be on Thursday morning and a Friday afternoon (kit can remain in school). Please can you ensure that your child wears or has a pair of trainers in school. Forest school will be on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable ‘named’ clothing for these activities, including a sunhat and appropriate footwear.
Finally, if you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office 203728 or email penyfroprimaryschool@penyfro.swansea.sch.uk and we will get back to you.
Kind Regards, Mrs Rees, Mrs Barratt and Ms Macfarlane (Friday’s class teacher)
