Welcome to Year 3!
Croeso i Flwyddyn Tri!
Welcome to our Year 3 class page. Here you will find useful information and reminders related to our general routines and activities, as well as links to helpful websites and online resources.
It will also be a space to share and celebrate some of the interesting and exciting activities we have been carrying out in class.
Autumn Term Class Information
Dear Parents/ Carers,
Much of this term’s work will be based on our new topic ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ with links made to celebrations such as Bonfire Night and religious festivals. We will be looking at where food comes from and the harvesting of autumn crops as well as healthy eating and food groups. We will be working collaboratively with Year 1 and 2 as this is a shared topic. Please send in any books or items of interest related to the class topic for ‘show and tell’.
Mathematics and Numeracy: Place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication & division. Time, money, financial literacy and problem solving.
Literacy, Language and Communication: Narrative: setting and dialogue, explanation writing and acrostic poetry. Literacy and Numeracy across the curriculum will be taught through our class topic with a cross curricular approach.
PE: Our weekly PE sessions will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday (swimming). Your child will require PE kit such as a T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms/ shorts and trainers to take part. Please can you also ensure that children have suitable clothing for our outdoor PE lessons. Please see separate letter regarding details of our weekly swimming lessons.
Other class routines include:
- Spelling and mental maths tests will be carried out every Friday morning. A list of weekly spelling words and maths questions will be given out at the beginning of every half term. Please ensure that your child prepares in advance for these tests. Information regarding weekly spelling/maths tests will follow in the next couple of weeks once the children have settled into new routines.
- Homework will be issued on a Friday, to be completed by the following Wednesday. Homework will start w/b 16.9.24.
For Part 1 of their homework, children will be expected to write 5 spelling sentences using their weekly spelling words. Spelling and times tables tests will take place on a Friday.
For Part 2, the task will alternate weekly. Pupils will have homework set on MyMaths one week. The following week, pupils will need to select an activity to complete from the Autumn homework grid. A separate letter will be sent next week with further details regarding homework .
- Forest School will be on a Friday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable ‘named’ clothing for these activities, including appropriate footwear. Due to the lack of space in the classroom, it will not be possible for the children to leave their Forest school wear in school. May I also take this opportunity to request that bags, other than a lunch box and flat bookbag are only sent into school when necessary. Many thanks for your cooperation with this.
- The children are able to bring fruit for breaktime either in their lunchbox or in a small tub which they can keep in their individual trays, they are also required to bring a bottle of water which we are able to refill as and when throughout the day. Please ensure that these are all labelled.
- Our class Welsh mascot ‘Dewi’ will be sent home with one of the pupils each week to spend the weekend with them. Please can you encourage your child to write (in Welsh) about their weekend in the notebook that will be inside the bag. There are also guide sheets and a Welsh dictionary inside the bag to help the children. Photos and drawings are also welcome.
Book Bags - Throughout the year I will be encouraging the children to become more independent in their reading and selection of appropriate books. Please ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school Monday to Thursday. Please listen to your child read as often as possible and make a weekly comment in the record, these are really helpful. A discussion with your child about what he/ she has read can also help to check understanding.
I look forward to seeing you throughout the course of the term and please contact me should you have any worries or concerns.
Kind regards,
Miss E Harris
Year 3 Teacher
