Year 2 Autumn Term 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope that you have had a lovely summer and welcome you back to a new school year.

Much of this term’s work will be based on our new topic ‘Ready, Steady, Grow’ with links made to celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Harvest and religious festivals. Within our topic, the children will take part in practical activities to explore where food comes from and learn about life on a farm. They will learn about what seeds and plants need to grow and grow plants themselves! We will be working collaboratively with Year 2 and 3 as this is a shared topic. Please send in any books or items of interest related to the class topic for ‘show and tell’

Cooking sessions will take place when linked to our topics, we kindly ask for a £3.00 contribution to the cost of ingredients this term. Your contributions are much appreciated.

The main Literacy focus for Year 2 will involve consolidation of phonic sounds, letter formation and spelling patterns as well as the development of extended sentence structures. The children will progress to writing a series of connecting sentences and consider the way in which they organise their writing. Weekly themes will include stories and poems as well as non-fiction work.  Information regarding weekly spelling/times tables tests will be sent out after half term.

Please ensure that your child brings their book bag and ‘reading record’ to school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please listen to your child read as often as possible and make a weekly comment in the record, these are really helpful.  Your child will also be able to select a book of their choice from the school library to share with you at home.

Mathematics will be taught through a range of practical activities, songs, rhymes and games as well as individual activity books. It will involve varied number work, time, pattern, and financial literacy. Literacy and Numeracy across the curriculum will be taught through our class topic with a cross- curricular approach.

PE will be held on Thursday morning and a Friday afternoon (kit can be left in school). Forest school will be on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable ‘named’ clothing for these activities, including appropriate footwear. As Forest school will be during the last session of the day, the children will be sent home in their Forest School clothing.

Due to the lack of space in our classroom we ask that, where possible, the children avoid bringing bags to school, other than a lunch box and flat bookbag. Many thanks for your cooperation with this.

Please continue to send a fruit/vegetable snack in a named box/bag for your child to eat at playtime as well as a named water bottle for them to drink from throughout the day.

Finally, if you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office 203728 or email penyfroprimaryschool@penyfro.swansea.sch.uk and we will get back to you.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Rees, Mrs Davies and Ms Macfarlane (Friday’s class teacher)
