Year 2 Spring Term 2026

Dear Parents/Carers,

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! Welcome back to a new term.

Much of this term’s work will be based on our topic ‘Caring for Our Amazing World’.  Children will explore practical ways to look after the environment and learn how small actions can help care for our planet. We will be working collaboratively with Year 1 and 3 as this is a shared topic. The children have already had the opportunity to share their ideas and interests about what they'd like to learn. If you have any books or items of interest please send them in for us to share. We will also be making links to celebrations such as St Dwynwen's day, St. David's Day and religious festivals.  In addition, we will  participate in seasonal activities such as the RSPB's Big School's Birdwatch and Children's Mental Health week. What a busy term!

The children will continue to learn and consolidate the Read Write Inc. phonic patterns and will be encouraged to apply these to their independent reading and writing. They will continue to receive differentiated weekly spelling tests covering a range of related patterns. These tests will resume on 15.1.26. In creative writing we will look at vocabulary development, and using conjunctions such as 'but, 'so' and 'because' to extend sentences. Literacy across the curriculum will be developed through topic related themes.

Please ensure that your child has their book bag and ‘reading record’ in school on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please listen to your child read as often as possible and make a weekly comment in the reading record, these are really helpful.  Your child will continue to be able to select a book of their choice from the school library to share with you at home.

Mathematics will be taught through a range of practical activities as well as more formal recording. This will involve varied number work and activities related to shape, money and measures. Much of this will also be reinforced through topic related Numeracy across the curriculum. The children will continue to receive differentiated times table tests. Please continue to help your child learn their times tables at home.

PE will be held on Thursday morning and a Friday afternoon (kit can remain in school). Please can you ensure that your child wears or has a pair of trainers in school on these days as PE sessions may be held outside if the weather is suitable. Forest school will be on a Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable ‘named’ clothing for these activities, including appropriate footwear. As Forest school will be during the last session of the day, the children will be sent home in their Forest School clothing.

Please continue to send a fruit/vegetable snack in a named box/bag for your child to eat at playtime as well as a named water bottle for them to drink from throughout the day.

We continue to really struggle with space in the classroom for large school bags. If at all possible, we ask that the children do not bring bags to school other than a lunch box and flat bookbag. Many thanks for your cooperation with this.

Finally, if you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us via the school office 203728 or email penyfroprimaryschool@penyfro.swansea.sch.uk and we will get back to you.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Rees, Mrs Davies and Ms Macfarlane (Friday’s class teacher)
