Sounds and High Frequency Words

Sounds

In Reception, the children are introduced to a new sound each week. The children then learn to use this in their reading and writing as the year goes on. We follow the Read, Write, Inc scheme on this. It is extremely useful to reinforce these at home with your child to build their confidence.

A document with these sounds can be found below.

Fred Talk

At school we use a puppet called Fred who can only speak in sounds, not whole words.  We call this Fred Talk.

For example, Fred would say d-o-g, we would say dog.  Your child is taught to hear sounds and blend them together in sequence to make a word.  We start with blending oral sounds, then progress to reading the letters and blending them together to read the word.

A document with Fred talk games you can play at home is attached below.

Here is a small clip of Fred Talk in action:

High Frequency Words

Once your child is confident with all their sounds, they will move on to learning high frequency words. These will be put in the envelope at the back of their reading records each week. They will include green and red words. Green words can be sounded out/Fred talked. Red words cannot be sounded out (you can't Fred a red).

These words will be given out as your child learns them. There is a copy attached below if you would be to know the progression of these.
